94.7 Mountain Bike Challenge 2012-Just Done it.Nasty Puncture, great crew. What Spirit as we rode for the Pink Drive in support of Cancer

Our crew for 94.7 MTB Challenge.Myself,Ahmed Ismail,Muhammad Ismail and Hamzah Ismail

What a fantastic day as we completed the Momentum 94.7 30 km Muntain Bike route. For me it was extra special as I rode for the Pink Drive and in support of Cancer. The reason for chosing the Pink drive is due to a special and personal, yet sad experience. To complete it was  my mission and we had a great crew. We also had 11 year old Hamzah Ismail(pictured far right) doing the 30 km. It was a superb day and the sun was baking. The okes started before me and I told Ahmed Il see him on the way as he took Hamzah in. Muhammed was off as well.

Firstly my journey starts with our contribution to the Pink Drive. I collected my jersey and goodies, made a contribution, got my tatoo for the ride and yeah I was a bit nervous and anxious doing a trail in race conditions

Doing the race for the Pink Drive
My start time was the latest at bout 9:30. On the eve I got my stuff in order and my bike etc. On the eve the worst thing you fear is a puncture. The words of Saeed Anwar always rings through my head. When you fielding and you dont want the ball it comes to you.
I was hoping a puncture didnt come my way

Getting my gear ready
I woke up on rce day feeling lekker. Toast ,Peanut butter .I met the Ismails at 6am at the Engen on Empire and we set off to the Polo Fields at the Estate where the start was. Atmosphere was incredible and I chilled because of the late start. I also would be wearing my sponsored shoe ,sponsored for my Cancer Rides. What a Thing

Just for the Swoosh0018 Pink Drive
The start
It was hot and as we started the Heart rate was high. The excitement and anxiety. I set myself a goal of 30 kms in 3 hours + and was hoping to meet Ahmed on the way. Once I got into a rythym I was quite enjoying myself,I was even climbing well and just kept pedalling and enjoying the sites and trail,Rocks, water, bridges.Sublime

a pic from last year and what the trails are like
On about 20kms I stopped to help a young kid and her mum with a puncture 🙂 . When I was done I said to myself,Shukr I havent had a puncture yet. And Boom ,on the Back tyre. The Ismails were aead of me and I was ace out. I changed the tube, my first gas bomb went off in my hand and the second worked. Took me half and hour. Ten minutes on the Back tyre was flat again. I met some French guys that helped me.They were life savers. We pumped the tyre and I caught up with the Ismails.
A special thanks to this man from France.
There was another gentleman rising with his family that looked out for me till the finish line.A special thanks to him.
It got hotter and we kept stopping and pumping ,stopping and pumping.
Also what impressed me was young Hamzah Ismail who was fighting the trail.
We approached a hill called “THE WALL”. A monster. From there the amazing experience was the brotherhood, spirit and fight by fellow riders. It was like the Gong of the Comrades.People were willing each other on, Some had cramps, some were on drips because of dehydration.
We soldiered on and pumped the tyres every 2o minutes or so. In the end we rode in. 3hours and 45 mins. But we completed it and brought young Hamzah in with a relaxed ride. I crossed the fisnish line with a flat back tyre. When the medal is put around your neck its and awesome feeling. For me I can say Ive done it and rode the 2012 MTB Mountain Bike challenge in support of cancer and I have taken back an amzing experience. Next year we will try again
