I don’t think so Nas. Since Heyneke Meyer took over, we’ve lost a huge amount of key players through a numver of reasons in a short space of time. Our squad is so depleted in Hooker’s for example, that Meyer has even called up the Sharks reserve hooker to the Springbok touring squd. The same problem is at Lock and other positions.

Recently we’ve lost: John Smit, Victor Matfield & Jaque Fourie (retirement); Schalk Burger, Bismarck du Plessis, Pierre Spies, JP Pietersen (injury) and also Fourie du Preez, Bakkies Botha, Danie Rossouw, Guthro Steenkamp (playing in contracts overseas).

That’s a huge amount of experience and players regarded as the best in the world in their respective positions to be out of the Springbok camp all at once.

That said, we still played very crappy against Argentina.

At least this experience will help us build good depth though, but it is an unfortunate situation for Meyer to be in, as the new coach to try and manage with.

I hope so! There’s one more factor counting against us- the people who arranged the schedule of this tournament did it like their ass.

We are the most disadvantaged geographically, with Australia & New Zealand being right next to each othe
r, so when we have to play our away games, they should be planed to run as smoothly as possible with no unnessesary trips.

In this case we fly to Argentina, then past New Zealand all the way to the west of Australia to Perth, thereafter back to New Zealand, then all the way back to South Africa again.

This will add a huge amount of flying time and jet lag, while the other teams are travelling comparitively less.

It should have been planned in a logical order i.e.:

    Fly to Argentina,
    then to New Zealand,
    then to Perth, Australia,
then back home to South Africa.

This zig-zagging is adding to the fatigue factor and can easily be avoided.
