NEWS – TOP GEAR Series 10

The latest Top Gear just kicked off in the UK & I just finished watching episode 1 twice. It’s that flippin good. Top Gear have stepped up a gear & taken their game to a whole nuther level. The production quality is Top Class, the chemistry in the way the presenters jell is very entertaining. Clarkson’s still obnoxious, James May still a bafoon & Hammond the Hamster still the cool short guy. A show truly for “Petrol Heads”.

Remember the GTI W12 concept twin turbo 12 cylinder? Well it’s the first car they manage to test & thrash around the Top Gear track. I was stunned that they managed to get this concept car from VW. The first thing Clarkson decides to do is drift it around tight bends. The cars looks neat but isn’t a fully developed prototype in terms of handling, it was developed in just 8 weeks using parts from a Gallardo, Bentley & R8. The 477Kw GTI W12 is still slower than a Scooby STi & CL65 AMG around the TG track. The 100km dash comes in at 3.5s which is super car performance with a claimed top speed of 360Km/h.

Audi TT Clubsport
Cool Concept – released earlier in the year & worth a look. A 220Kw 2 liter turbo motor in this freshly designed TT for permanent sunshine. Increased power compared to the S3 due to a redesigned intake manifold. Riding on 20 inch wheels enabled by Quattro & ceramic brakes. It’s being considered for limited production by Audi.

MODS – The Valve Train Part 1 – Valve Springs
The valve train consists of valve springs, valve retainers & the actual valve. Upgraded valve springs which are stronger & stiffer than conventional springs will aid the inclusion of a “wild cam”. Basically all cams have a recommended setup which advises about the limits of valve train components. Using a 288 Degree cam with 12.8mm lift & standard valve springs will not realize the true potential of the cam. Standard lift on a 2 litre twin cam setup is about 6mm. This is where upgraded valve spring come into play. It will comfortably allow the valve to operate at the required lift without damaging the head or cams. Locally I’ve started seeing ads from one or two importers selling high rev kits which are quite expensive but aid wilder cams for some awesome performance gains. It also raises your rev limit for a wider power band. Titanium valve springs are the ultimate, makers like CROWER, HKS, Skunk & Greddy all produce these units for performance Jap cars like the Supra, Skyline, VTEC & 200SX. This is some serious modding usually only done for race spec jammies.

DRAG SCENE – Wesbank Raceway – 17 Oct 07
de MUN Rio & Mr. B witnessed some interesting dices & crazy burnouts at the soon to be extinct Wesbank Raceway. From next year onward I hear wesbank will be sold off & no longer exist as a track. That’s a shame. Anyways let’s recap on some wicked events from this past Wednesday night.

A pearlescent 200sx kitted out with a purposeful aero kit making drifting look easy. This highly tuned SX powered by Skyline RB25 motor turned up the style with some excellent drift demos.

Lining up to dice: GTI vs. OPC 335 vs. RS4 Beetle vs. Evo 8

Results
OPC left the GTi for dead
Beemer 335i klapped the RS4 – later in the pits the oke wit da RS4 was a bit bamboozled
And finally the Red Beetle turbo screwed the EVO 8. VOLLA’s rule!!
