RUGBY WORLD CUP UPDATE 2007
The RWC 2007 started on Friday and it started with a bang. Argentina caused a major upset and the group of death with France and Ireland also wanting to qualify has been thrown wide open. The French missed crucial kicks and once again you need an accurate goal kicker who has an 80% strike rate if you going to do well. The English ref Spreadbury also helped the Argentines and some of his decisions were shocking.
The other northern hemisphere sides did not impress. Wales battled against Canada, Scotland were not impressive against Portugal. England were atrocious against the USA, failing to score four tries to get a bonus point. They look a shadow of the champions of four years ago. Italy were thrashed by the all blacks WHO AT ONE STAGE WERE SCORING A POINT EVERY 30 SECONDS. and Ireland stumbled against a very impressive Namibia.
The ausies did the business and it looks very likely that the winner is going to come from the southern hemisphere. It is early to say but the big three from the tri – nations looked miles ahead of the rest.
The Boks had a tough assignment against a very physical team. The Samoans started well and got the 1st try and in the 1st half had the boks on the back foot. Habana is world class and looks fit and hungry. If they can get ball out to him with a bit of space he is going to terrorize defenses. We scrummed well and the lineout went well. Not impressed with Danie Roussouw at 8th men, Bob Skinstad should start. The injury to de villers is a huge blow and what does jake do? Who does he call up? Inside center is crucial and the injury breaks up crucial combinations that have been set for a couple of years.
On the overall I think it was a great start to the RWC 2007, and credit to the minnows like Namibia, Portugal who showed that they have heart and they belong at the RWC.
